Saluda County Coroner and Death Investigations

The Saluda County Coroner is the elected chief death investigator for the county. The office is located in the Saluda County Multicomplex Building at 175 Public Safety Drive, Saluda, SC 29138. Current Coroner Angie Rita can be reached at (864) 430-8127. An additional office address is 409 West Butler Avenue, Saluda, SC 29138, phone (864) 445-8020. The coroner and staff are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to respond to all fatalities that fall under coroner jurisdiction.

The coroner's mission is stated plainly: "To serve the people of Saluda County with professionalism and integrity while upholding our commitment to determine the cause and manner of death in a dignified manner while maintaining respect for the family." Every death in Saluda County that is suspicious, violent, or sudden must be investigated. The coroner also reviews natural deaths that occur less than 24 hours after hospital admission. Each investigation produces death records that feed into the Saluda County death index and the statewide registration system.

The investigation process is thorough. The coroner ensures the death scene and all evidence are preserved, determines whether death was natural, accidental, homicidal, suicidal, or undetermined, and coordinates with law enforcement, pathology, anthropology, toxicology, odontology, entomology, and trace evidence specialists as needed. Under SC Code Title 17, Chapter 5, the coroner has full authority to conduct inquests and determine cause of death for all cases under coroner jurisdiction.

What the Saluda County Coroner Does

The Saluda County Coroner signs death certificates, issues burial removal permits, and issues cremation permits. The coroner also makes death notifications for other counties when needed. Death certificates are not issued from the coroner's office directly. They are completed and forwarded to the South Carolina Department of Public Health once all investigation reports are final. The coroner is present at most autopsies and determines when one is needed.

An important part of the coroner's role is family support. After the investigation is complete, the coroner's office returns all personal belongings of the deceased to the family. The coroner notifies relatives in person when possible. The office remains a resource for families throughout the process. As the coroner's office puts it, each staff member works to ensure the process is accomplished with professionalism and compassion.

The history of coroners in South Carolina goes back to the colonial period. The King of England appointed the first Coroner of South Carolina by relocating him from England to Charleston. Until 1706, the only coroner in the colony was in Charleston. Beginning in 1785, Justices of the County Court selected coroners for two-year terms. Since 1868, under the SC Constitution, each of the state's 46 counties has elected a coroner to four-year terms.
